Here
is an exquisite collection of love songs from Scotland, Ireland, Wales,
Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, performed by four outstanding interpreters
of traditional song.
CELTIC SONGS
OF LOVE (BEJOCD-16) is a compilation album which includes four previously
unreleased tracks (How Can Ye Gang, Lassie?, Merched, Red Top Knots, and
Deus Ganin Me D'Am Bro) as well as Celtic material drawn from other Beautiful
Jo albums. Fernhill's Julie Murphy is already acknowledged among the foremost
singers of her generation. Emma Christian is well established as a leading
light of the Manx Celtic revival - Folk Roots called her Graih my Chree
on this album 'an achingly lovely piece'. Less well known, perhaps, is
Scotland's Moira Craig co-host of the ballad sessions at Sidmouth International
Folk Festival whose performances here are a revelation. 'Moira's glancing
Scots lilt is captured perfectly,' wrote The Living Tradition. A frequent
broadcaster on Radio Telefis Eireann, Michael Henry from Ballyhaunis, County
Mayo, completes the quartet with 'a rich, lyrical voice suited to the epic
songs' - Folk Roots . The vocal performances are enhanced by instrumentation
from top-flight musicians who include fiddler Chris Leslie from Fairport
Convention.
What the critics
have said...
'Desire, passion, loss - the trinity
of emotions most often associated with that timeless human foible - love
- are expertly and eloquently articulated on this unassuming, sensitively
made collection.'
The Living Tradition
'The singers cover their own native
areas and are excellent exponents of their chosen trades... the arrangements
are both subtle and laid back, and perfectly in tune with the material
itself... very fine performances'
Folk Roots
'Tasteful and refined... put together
with integrity and care'
