The new release from Beautiful Jo Records is an exquisite
collection of folk songs from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Isle
of Man.
Produced in association with the retail chain Past Times, 'Celtic
Airs and Ballads' unites the talents of some of the finest traditional
singers in the British Isles. The vocalists are Emma Christian, Moira
Craig, Michael Henry and Julie Murphy (described by Go West festival
as 'the foremost exponent of traditional music of her generation').
Musical accompaniment is supplied by Peter Acty, Ceri Matthews, Jonathan
Shorland and Chris Leslie (a fiddler internationally known for his
work with The Albion Band). Instruments range from flute and oboe
to cittern, mandolin and Celtic harp, and the songs - often poignant,
sometimes tragic - include pieces both in English and in Gaelic.
Celtic Airs and Ballads
is avalable on CD (BEJOCD-13) and cassette (BEJO-13).
What the critics have said...
'A lovely CD of Celtic airs which has this
extraordinary homesick quality in the singing - or maybe it's
just me listening to it - but I loved it.'
Poet Tom Paulin on the BBC 2 television show Late Night Live, naming
Celtic Airs and Ballads among his favourite artworks of 1996.
'The singers are perfectly
suited to their songs but what makes this CD and its content as
approachable as it is, is the sympathetic backing, in particular
from Pete Acty... Produced by Tim Healey, who has done some excellent
work in recent years bringing 'real' folk music to the
general public, this is a CD of quality... let the music take you
away,'
